Dear Parents & Carers,  

Firstly, I would like to say a big THANK YOU for your support last week. It was very  upsetting for staff and pupils to miss all our Christmas activities.

What happened?

As I know you are aware we had a new boiler installed during August 2009 and have benefitted from a much improved heating system since. However earlier last week we had some radiator noises coming from the corridor area.

We called out an engineer who checked everything and informed us that one of the radiators on the corridor (opposite the meeting room) had a leak.

Why such a big problem?

The school corridor has a ducting running under it through which all the pipes run. The pipes in this area are  asbestos lagged. The asbestos has been inspected and was in good order but should not be tampered with.

However, to fix the leak we have to strip the asbestos from all the pipes. The heating had to be switched off as the leak could not be fixed without this work being done. The heating and hot water will have to be off until the work is completed.December 2009 Newsletter in full

What happens next?

The main school corridor will be unavailable until the work is completed which is expected to be week beginning 18th January 2010.

We did not want to close school and have tried to avoid having children walk to other local schools and have therefore reorganised the school to enable all children to stay on site. (See plan on reverse)

This plan has been discussed with the Local Authority and there is no risk to any persons working on the premises from the work being done.

You are invited to attend an information  meeting in the school dining hall on Monday 4th January at 10.45am. There will also be an evening session at 6pm in the School Hall.

Thank you for the excellent attendance at the recent parent/teacher meetings. Home support for a child’s learning is wonderful and can often make the difference between a child making good progress rather than satisfactory progress.

Class teams can always see a difference between pupils whose learning is supported at home and those who do not find time to read or do their homework. If you need any help supporting your child please do not hesitate to speak to any member of the school team but particularly the Learning Mentors.

Our Social Worker, Charlotte Dewar has settled in well and is supporting a number of families to help reconcile issues such as housing, medical needs and access to services. We are lucky to be part of the Social Worker in Schools project and Charlotte is available on Friday mornings.

Welcome back to another school year and what an excellent start the children have already made. In our first assembly of the school year every child was wearing school uniform and looked smart and ready to learn, thank you.

We are saying hello to a number of new staff Mr Alexander—classteacher in Blue Class, Miss Halstead—classteacher in Purple Class and Miss Bentley—classteacher in Red Class. All the staff have worked hard over the summer and I am sure you will agree the classrooms were welcoming and fresh for the start of term.

Finally we are trying a new time for our weekly WOW! Assembly. It will now be at 2.30pm on      Fridays. We hope many of you will continue to join us for this celebration of children’s work and effort each week.

Dear Parents & friends of Bridge Hall Primary School,

Well done to our year 6 pupils for excellent effort and attitude in their recent SATs (Statutory Assessment Tests). All the staff were impressed with their approach to 9 tests in a week and I am confident they all tried their best. The results will be sent out in July as soon as school receives them from the markers.

Year 2 have also completed their assessment tasks and tests with Mrs Purewal and Miss Heath. Their results will be included with their annual report in July.

Clubs will be up and running next half term and the club list is on the reverse of this letter.

Governors have recently approved the school budget and the following priorities have been planned for:

· Increase staff ratio in Early Years to improve rate of progress of pupils and ensure any barriers to learning are quickly identified and overcome as early as possible.

· Reduce class size in Key Stage 2 (years 3-6) for a year — specially funded by the Greater Manchester Challenge. More information to follow next month.

· Continue to develop the school building and land including a new boiler and roof (funding supported by the Local Authority); new roof for Early Years and new flooring in the corridor and dining hall.

Congratulations to Mr Nelson who has joined the team as a Learning Mentor to further develop this area of our school support team and is already having a positive impact with many young people, working closely with Mr Cartwright.

Roseanne Tracey was successful in applying for the midday supervisor role and has already taken up this post. Roseanne is committed to further improving children’s dinner time experiences. If you have any suggestions please do not hesitate to contact her at school.

Mrs Jones will be joining Mrs Chesney in the school office from the 15th June as a Clerical Assistant.

The Governors have still to appoint 2 midday organisers to start in September please ask at the school office if you are interested in these posts.

This week is tinged with sadness as we say goodbye to Mrs Warhurst after 31 years at Bridge Hall.

Thank you to so many of you for your contributions and we are speaking to the family about ideas for a gift.

There is a card for any parents and members of the community to sign. Different staff will be out and about before and after school but you can also pop into Mrs Shaw’s class to sign it.

BIG assembly on Thursday and we want you there! Please bring friends and family who may have known Mrs Warhurst. We will have a good wishes book going round for you to leave Mrs Warhurst a message or just wish her well.

Don’t forget the messages book. Messages can be handed in to Mrs Shaw right up to Wednesday for inclusion in the book.

Do you have any photos of Mrs Warhurst or of school in the past? We would love to see them and with your consent copy them. Please again hand them into Mrs Shaw.

Dear Parents & friends of Bridge Hall Primary School,

I am thrilled to be able to tell you that work will start on the Early Years playground at the end of November. After all the wonderful improvements to the classroom environments over the years it is exciting to be finally making a start on the playground developments.

The plan for the playground will be on display in the Early Years Reception area from next week. I would ask that you help us to ensure children’s safety during the development work by keeping your child out of that area before and after school.

Over coming weeks we are reviewing a number of school policies. As always we welcome your suggestions and input. The list of meetings are below with dates, times and focus. If you are unable to attend the meetings, but have ideas for improvement, then please ask at the school office for a suggestions form and return it as soon as possible.

Thursday 13th November at 2pm Behaviour Policy

Wednesday 19th November at 2pm Homework Policy

Friday 28th November at 2pm Sex & Relationships education

Friday 5th December at 9.30am Organisation of the school day review

All the meetings will be in school but to help us plan where and organise refreshments please let the school office know if you will be attending.

Welcome back to school and hasn’t the weather been awful during the summer? We are currently in the process of drawing up plans for improving the school playgrounds. Lets hope the weather improves by the time work is finished so we can use the playgrounds.

If you haven’t already had a look at Red Class since the building work in the summer it is definitely worth a visit. Well done to Mrs Shaw and all the staff who helped get it looking so wonderful and stimulating ready for the children on Wednesday the 3rd September.

We have had a great start back with lots of brilliant work already happening and good attendance and punctuality. Thank you.

The school gates will be open every morning from 8.45am and in bad weather we try to open the school doors as quickly as possible but always by 10 to 9. In the afternoon the gates will be open from 3.05pm. For children in Yellow, Blue, Purple and Green Classes please drop your child off at the school door and try to avoid the school corridor as it can get very full. If you need to speak to your child’s classteacher then after school is easier for the class teams to have time to talk to you or alternatively ring the school office to make an appointment.

School clubs are starting soon, all the information is on the reverse of this letter. Please complete the request slip and send in to school as quickly as possible as we offer places on a first come first served basis.

FINALLY PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SCHOOL WILL NOW BE OPEN AS NORMAL ON FRIDAY THE 24TH OCTOBER BUT CLOSED FOR STAFF TRAINING ON MONDAY 3RD NOVEMBER. APOLOGIES FOR THIS CHANGE IN DATE.

Scholastic Book Fair

I would like to express my thanks to all the parents, friends and children of Bridge Hall who purchased books at our recent book fair. Throughout the week a total of £520.85 of books were bought. This means that school can now purchase £53 worth of books and reading resources for our school library. This amount exceeded expectations and reflects the fantastic support being provided at Bridge Hall Primary School from its parents, pupils and friends. Thank you once again for this success.

Book Character Day

It is World Book Day on Thursday 6th March and as part of these celebrations your child will be taking part in a Book Character Day.

We are asking for as many children as possible to dress up as their favourite book character.

If you would like some ideas I am sure your child’s class teacher would be more than happy to help. We will be holding a special assembly on this day to celebrate, share and meet our book characters!

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the friends and family of Bridge Hall Primary School a happy and prosperous 2008.

I am also looking forward to the exciting challenge of being Acting Headteacher whilst Mrs. Sutton is on Maternity leave.

Great news!

Congratulations! Mrs. Sutton gave birth to Luke Anthony Sutton, a healthy and happy baby boy, on the 9th January. Mother and baby are doing well. Mrs. Sutton would like to thank everyone for their good wishes and she is looking forward to coming into school to say hello as soon as possible.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR-Friday 25th January until Wednesday 30th January

Bridge Hall Primary School will be hosting a book fair in the School Hall before and after school.

Books will be displayed and will be available to purchase at a discounted price. You and your child will be able to choose from a wide range of exciting books. School will earn 10% in book commission if we all spend a total of £250 throughout the week. So please try and pop in and see what is on offer!

If there are any parents who would be able to help between 8.45 to 10.00 and 2.45 to 3.45 to assist in the sale and preparation of this worthwhile event then please see Miss Heath. Any offers of help would be greatly appreciated.
